The Leviathan Axe was forged by the Huldra Brothers, the dwarven master-smiths Sindri and Brok, at the request of Laufey the Witch, Kratos's wife Faye. Faye intended the axe to be passed to her son Atreus, but on her deathbed she instructed Kratos to take it instead. Throughout God of War (2018) and Ragnarok, Kratos uses the axe both as a melee weapon and as a thrown weapon that returns to his hand on command, an in-game mechanic borrowed from Norse mythology's Mjolnir. The axe is also imbued with the runic magic of cold, allowing Kratos to freeze enemies on contact.

The design draws on real-world Viking-age war axe shapes, particularly the broad-bladed Dane axe used by Norse warriors between the 8th and 11th centuries. The runes carved into the head are the Younger Futhark alphabet used in Viking Age Scandinavia. This god of war axe replica preserves the rune detail, the asymmetric blade profile, and the wrapped handle binding that the game design used.
